Latency and Matchmaking Update

2023-06-25

Hello People of The Fog,

We would like to thank you for your strong support and patience since the update in March. We have been continuously listening to our community's feedback, especially with regard to the game latency issues. We understand how frustrating this can be, and have been hard at work on improving this experience.

As game latency and lag issues may vary between different users, it is a complex issue to troubleshoot. This is because the root cause could be caused by many variables including but not limited to the server, network, geographical locations, hardware, or a combination of the above.

Our team has been hard at work trying to identify and resolve these issues to provide a better player experience. We have deployed more servers, now covering most global regions: Asia, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, South America, and North America. However, we continue to see reports of latency issues after these deployments. As a result, we have adapted the matchmaking rules and logic that should bias matchmaking towards regionally appropriate servers.

Before:
Player Ranks are used for matchmaking across all global regions. Once five similarly ranked players are locked in, the Trial is hosted on a regional server with the lowest average ping among the five players.

After:
When playing solo, matchmaking will only occur on the regional server with the lowest ping for you. When playing as a team, you will be matchmaking on a regional server based on the team leader's lowest ping.

In summary, the new matchmaking rules guarantee that players will be matched with the regional server that provides the lowest ping. This change aims to improve your gameplay experience by minimizing latency and improving latency-caused "Hitbox issues". It's worth noting that players may experience longer queue times due to the matchmaking pool being spread across various servers.

We would like to thank you for all of your feedback and support as we continue to monitor latency issues.
